The Happy Hans Band entertained the crowd of about 150 revelers, while our talented cooks Lorrie and Beth, along with their army of volunteers provided a dinner of Brats, Sauerkraut, Potato Salad and Apple Turnovers.  There was plenty of beer and wine to go around, with pop and hot dogs for our youngest partiers.

The GMVCC would like to thank our generous partners for providing monetary support, food, or raffle items.  In alphabetical order:  Aegis of Kent, Azafran Mediterranean Bistro, Buds and Blooms of Maple Valley, Columbia Bank (Maple Valley), Covington Place Senior Apartments, Gary and Candy Harper, International Social Club, Joyce Thoensen, Karen’s Footcare,  Lind’s Quality Meats, Maple Valley Bar and Grill, Maple Valley 2 Senior Softball Team,  Marcia and Gregg MacDonald, Papa John’s Pizza (Maple Valley), Rich and Pauline Taylor, STEAMboat Studio, Stocktons Restaurant, S’Wiched Sandwich Shop, Testy Chef Restaurant, Wilderness Village QFC and Wilderness Village Starbucks.

We could not have pulled off this event without our outstanding legion of volunteers:  Marcia MacDonald, Shane Baker, Pauline Taylor, Erin and Morgan Jones, Gladys Gilbert, Val Jolley, Ron Keller, Shelley Kimmerle and Lon Protteau, along with members of the Maple Valley 2 Senior Softball Team:  Rich Taylor, Judy Kloss, Mary McDermott, Roger and Nancy Jones, Dave and Yvonne Jellison, and Bob and Lisa Chevrette.   Auf Wiedersehen!

2016 Senior Citizen of the Year

Senior Citizen of the Year

Ellie Hollenbeck

It has been said that aging is mandatory, but growing old is optional. Greater Maple Valley is filled with older people whose lives inspire us about how to age with grace, enthusiasm, creativity, energy and hope. They make the lives of others better, simply by being around them. They volunteer their time to their community, well-deserving organizations, and family.

Every year, the Great Maple Valley Community Center recognizes a senior who has devoted his or her time and energy to improving the lives of others in our community; a senior whose life exemplifies positive aging through community involvement, healthy living, and positive interactions.

This year, we are proud to announce that the “Senior Citizen of the Year” is Ellie Hollenbeck. Ellie has been a volunteer at the GMVCC for 6 years and has volunteered her Master Gardener skills for both McLendon Hardware and the Lake Wilderness Arboretum for 8 years.  She is a loving mother of 4 kids, including 2 identical twin girls, 11 grandkids, her dog Casey and 2 guinea pigs.  Ellie is an avid Seattle sports enthusiast, and loves celebrating wins (or commiserating losses) with her friends in the community.

Senior Citizen of the YearEllie was honored on June 11 by GMVCC Executive Director Mark Pursley, Maple Valley Days Representative Kim Emmons and City of Maple Valley Mayor Sean P. Kelly who presented her with a certificate recognizing her importance and significance in our community. She also rode in a beautiful, classic convertible at the Maple Valley Days Parade.

For more information email Tracy or Jamie or call the Community Center at 425-432-1272.
