Maple Valley Oktoberfest
Greater Maple Valley Community Center
SAVE THE DATE! FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 21, 2012 - 3RD ANNUAL OKTOBERFEST
Dankeschon meine Damen und Herren!
The Oktoberfest Committee and GMVCC 50+ Connections Program would like thank all of the sponsors, volunteers and participants who took part in our 2nd Annual Community Oktoberfest at Lake Wilderness Lodge on Friday, October 21, 2011. Our event raised more than $7,500 to help support GMVCC 50+ Senior Programs.
The evening, M/C'd by our very own city councilman Bill Allison and radio personality Ron Upshaw of The Ron and Don Show 97.3 KIRO FM, was full of magic, music, dancing, and celebration. Participants enjoyed a full Bratwurst meal prepared by The Maple Valley Community Center cook staff and Scooter from Scooter's Custom Catering, as they listened, clapped and danced to the Oompah music from Happy Hans Band, twirled around the dance floor or celebrated with friends old and new in the beer and wine garden. The kids were entertained by Jocelyn, from Musically Minded then took part in the carnival games, cake walk and balloon designs put on by the Maple Valley Youth Council.
This family event would not have been possible without the hard work and commitment from the Oktoberfest Committee. A huge Thank You goes out to Rich Taylor, Valerie Pelk, Ken Mitch, Roger and Nancy Jones, Jean Buchanan, Tammy Himes, Pete Ryan, Melissa Mather, Stacy Norton, Antonia Kerney, the Maple Valley Senior Softball team, and to the many volunteers that helped run the event.
And once again the staff and administration of The Community Center would like to thank the sponsors for the Oktoberfest: Aegis Living of Issaqual and Kent, MultiCare Health System, The City of Maple Valley, Spiritwood at Pine Lake, Pabst Brewing Co., Fountain Court Assisted Living, BECU, Pinnacle Physical Therapy, The Maple Valley Rotary Club, Covington Place Senior Apts., Anthony's Jewelry, Farrington Court, Fred Meyer, Sam's Club, Rooters Restaurant, Lake Sawyer's Grocery, Head Games Salon, Fritz Gottfried, Pete Ryan, Dana Melbuer and Westover Auto Rebuild.

2011 Senior Citizen of the Year
Gary Habenicht
Congratulations to Gary Habenicht, the 2011 Maple Valley Days Senior Citizen of the year. Gary was nominated by his son Brett. Among his list of charitable accomplishments Gary has been an active member of the Maple Valley Lions Club and the Maple Valley Rotary Club. He was instrumental in the original Voice of Tahoma Education Committee and has volunteered countless hours in the development of three area parks.
Fall Prevention
Community Forums
More than one-third of people aged 65 and older fall each year, and those who fall once are two to three times more likely to fall again. However, we know that falls are not an inevitable result of aging.
The GMVCC Senior Program is pleased to host a series of four important community forums presented in partnership with Outpatient Physical Therapy, Pinnacle Physical Therapy, Maple Valley Fire & Life Safety, and Bartell Drugs in an effort to prevent falls.
Bring a list of all of your meds to let the pros review and discuss any possible problems with you. All events are FREE!

Wii Games
Virtual gaming on our big screen
Bowl, play tennis, golf or try your hand at boxing. Wii virtual games are a fun substitute, especially if you can't do the real thing. As players move a small hand-held motion sensitive wand, the television registers the motion, making the video game seem like the real thing. Health benefits may include improved hand-eye coordination, balance, muscular strength and endurance.
Our own GMVCC Wii Bowling League will take the summer off and resume league play with other South Sound senior centers in October. Practices will be held Friday mornings from 9:30 to 10:30 with matches scheduled ad lib.
